Jiyan Düyü (Gerrit Rietveld Academy graduate) has been awarded the Lakeside Collection Award 2022. The selection was amongst 23 talented artists selected for the Best of Graduates 2022 by the Ron Mandos Young Blood Foundation.

Motivation by the jury (Hester Alberdingk Thijm, Tomáš Libertíny, Annemarie van der Hoeven and Ali Keles) of Lakeside Collection Award 2022:

“The jury was impressed by her film “Birds Fly Back” and her entire presentation. The chosen setting, the wide barren mountain landscape in Eastern Turkey in which a group of children play, is like composition more than an ideal background, it even evokes references to seventeenth century landscape paintings.

The group of children is sometimes carefully directed, then they stand on the shoulder laughing naughtily shoulder to shoulder and then again the videographer releases them completely and they happily tumble over each other to.

As one judge noted: Warhol’s idea ofdirecting: let it happen! This changing composition, the chaos and order, tranquility and dynamics, gives the viewer a different perspective. Especially because in the installation, you have two spherical screens between which you stand, literally part of that world. You play along, as it were, and you inevitably go back to your own childhood. It is about connection and hope, an important universal humane theme, in which everyone can identify.

After long deliberation, the jury has unanimously chosen the winner Jiyan Düyü, who might not easily was expected to be working in a depot, but that is precisely why the jury would like to enter into this experiment and the director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has promised to support and make this possible wholeheartedly.

She will take the world through her lens; the jury finds her courage, her artistic quality and the fact that she makes her autobiographical story universal in this way is admirable and very powerful!

The other nominees of whom works have been acquired for the Lakeside Collection are: Ellis Holman, Pedro Kastelijns and Menno Pasveer.”

Jiyan Düyü (1995), ‘Birds fly back’ 2022 art work, video installation, became a part of the Lakeside Collection after winning the Lakeside Collection Award 2022

“Through my films and installations I approach my subjects with a cinematographic attitude. Suggesting realism by working with documentary aspects, characters seek to evoke recognition from the viewer. Using the perspective of a child, I look for tensions in the emotions we express as adults. The landscape seems to expose the characters to the load of their reality.

In the graduation work Birds fly back, the children of Hani and their mountains are the core. The children run and play through the Kurdish landscape. The starting point for this project was the loaded character of the mountains against the frivolous nature of children. An idea that arose from writing my thesis. The thesis questioned the role and influence of the mountains on Kurdish cinema. An extremely heavy image of the mountains was created by the analyzed films.

In the search of releasing the landscape of the loaded connotations, children seemed for me the most effective. They seem to share the lead role together, explain each other and can be seen as complementary and in harmony.”

Tandheelkunde Groep Nederland became a member of the Business Club of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Why chose to make a business commitment?

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is a museum of free thinkers with a strong humanist culture. The collection, which is partly made up of works of art donated by more than 1,700 collectors from Rotterdam, says a lot about the history of the museum and its future. Tandheelkunde Groep Nederland’s desire to be part of this has led to the housing of part of the Lakeside Collection in its own compartment in the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Favorite artwork in the museum collection?

Maurizio Cattelan , ‘Untitled (Manhole)’ 2001, baptized by the artist as Mr. Boijmans. Cattelan, (self-taught) artist, knows how to excite the viewer with his provocative, sarcastic but above all humorous works of art. The work ‘Manhole’ shows a hilarious self-portrait of the artist as a burglar, who has found his way upwards balancing by climbing on an accumulation of file cabinet, wooden pallet, moving boxes and a chair.

Parts of the interview:

Rotterdam entrepreneur Ali Keles (38) has an office on the banks of the Delftse Schie Villa Lakeside, also home to the Lakeside Collection. A collection of modern and contemporary works of art by both international and Dutch artists, which are partly housed in the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

I bought both business and private art. You hang that on the wall at the office or at home or put in the garden. I am not a curator, by the way, but an aficionada. The basis is the affective relationship you build with the artworks. I really felt an urgency to acquire art.

Gradually, Keles began to buy more art that others labeled him a collector.

I bought some art every now and then, without any hindrance. That’s how it developed. Limitless and in total freedom.

It is evident that Keles looks at art from a philosophical perspective.

What I find important is questioning yourself with existential questions, using the falsification theory, the search for knowledge and science to arrive at real truth. That doesn’t leave me as a person. When you see how artists are busy, it evokes critical thinking in you. Art wakes people up and makes them think.

Parts of the interview:

The Rotterdam based entrepreneur Ali Keles (38) brought a part of his art collection to the accommodation of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. He questions himself continuously. “What does the human Ali wishes?”

When I ever close my eyes, I would wish to feel that I have done something sensible.

Keles speaks calmly. He often thinks long.

The last thing I wanted was that the compartment would become an elite place. That is not who I am and what I represent. I wanted to justify myself, I was looking for legitimation. I also wanted to bring the space to life. Not just hanging up works and occasionally rotate. The legitimations is for that a young artist can work there.

The Lakeside Collection has more than eighty works by about fifty artists.

I really have a affective relationship with art. I fall in love and want have it close to me. It start with that. I often look at them. Sometimes I get moved and sometimes I have to laugh.

His investment firm is named Lakeside Capital Partners. Ask Keles what he is and he says: an enabler – or: someone who makes things possible.

I am a kind of architect, a puzzler. I bring ideas, people and resources together, and provide for a structure. We have no exit strategy. I am in it for the long term, to build companies, together with management.

Interviewer Algemeen Dagblad

Parts of the interview:

The new depot in Rotterdam is packed with works of art stored by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and large companies such as KPN and Rabobank. Plus: the collection of Ali Keles (38), an ‘ordinary’ Rotterdam entrepreneur and art collector. With a beautiful life story.

“This is the best view from the depot. You can see the museum with the historic tower, but also the Erasmus Bridge.” Ali Keles still intensely enjoys his place on the fourth floor of the collection building.

Not only does the founder-owner of Lakeside Capital Partners safely store his more than 80 contemporary works of art in the collection building, he also displays them. Now, for example, by well-known names in the art world such as Iván Navarro, Hans Op de Beeck and Jacco Olivier. And then this enthusiast also provides a young artist, Marloes Roeper, with a workplace. She is allowed to work in ‘his part’ of the Depot as an artist in residence.

Erasmiaans

,,At the Erasmiaans Gymnasium, now pretty much next to the Depot, I got some of it. I remember seeing slides of ancient art and being allowed to guess when it was made. I enthusiastically participated; I was often right with my guesses.”

Art collector

“You don’t get it overnight. It’s a development in yourself.”

It was the father of his bosom friend Mark Mouthaan, met while studying law, who gave him an important insight. ,,His father Floor was chairman of the board of PAN (an art fair in Amsterdam, ed.) and it was 17, 18 years ago my first visit to an art fair ever. It gave a feeling of tension, of enthusiasm. I was really triggered and kept going to art fairs afterwards as well. It was there that I actually learned that art isn’t just for museums. It was never really in my head before that you could collect it yourself.”

And also in the Kunsthal, in his own city, Keles learned a lesson. In 2011, he visited the exhibition I promise to love you: all works of art that were owned by Joop van Caldenborgh, at the time director-owner of the Rotterdam-based chemical group Caldic.

Free expression

Buying art Keles calls social responsibility. “The free expression of artists, people who record a certain period and reflect on it, is important. And that is why it is important to buy their work, because artists also have to make a living from something. I don’t think it’s enough to just find it beautiful and look at it.” It’s not about possession. “For me, buying art is mainly about preserving it for the future. To preserve it.”
